Wednesday, July 29 | 9:00 AM–12:00 PM
Rubenstein Conference Centre, Washington, DC
The bar for PhDs is getting ever higher – not least because AI is getting very good at analyzing data. That means that studies based on publicly available data are easier to run and, consequently, identifying important research questions, getting buy-in from field sites and funders, and designing research is more important than ever before. The CFXS PhD workshop was created to help with these challenges!
Meeting on Wednesday, July 29 from 9 am to noon in Washington DC before the full CFXS conference, PhD students / candidates will work with scholars that have authored and edited multiple field experiments, as well as getting feedback from each other and recent PhDs that have created job market papers from field experiments. The workshop covers topics including experimental design, data analysis and ethics, and it walks participants through the process of developing ideas for new field experiments as well as using the latest AI tools. It should be excellent preparation for participation at AOM. This is the fourth version of the workshop, which, according to past participants, has helped: “understand how I could better position my research for my audience and also to clearly define how my research question would address a relevant and important gap. Additionally, the structure itself was helpful in getting to some of the pre-experiment details.”
What Participants Can Expect
- Interactive sessions on field experiment design
- Case studies from senior faculty
- Small-group feedback on research ideas
- Mentorship from senior PhDs, postdocs, and junior faculty
- Guidance on developing projects into job market papers
- Opportunities to connect with the broader CFXS community
This is the fourth edition of the workshop, and past participants have highlighted the value of both the practical framework and the collaborative environment:
“The CFXS Strategy Experiment Canvas provided a unique structure to help me understand how I could better position my research for my audience and clearly define how my research question addressed an important gap. The workshop also helped me think more critically about implementation and experimental design.”
